Once you take the plunge and start looking around for your own house in crete with various agencies as to what they have for sale, you will rapidly realise that one agent's description of a DIY project may vary wildly to anothers.

One thing however is clear in Crete, you must not succumb to the mentality that you can do everything yourself.

Electricity

New Supplies

If you are looking to buying a house in crete that has no electricity, you must be aware that the process of obtaining an electricity supply can ONLY be handled by a qualified Greek electrician, whether employed by an architect in Crete or one of the many builders in crete. This is always true and must be factored into the costings for a renovation you have planned.

To apply for a new single phase electricity supply in crete will cost between 300 and 600 Euros depending of course on the assumption that the power supply to neighbouring properties or an overhead supply is within a reasonable distance and is suitably powerful to cope with the additional load A connection for a three phase electricity supply will cost between 500 - 1,000 Euros with three phase it may be less likely that there will be sufficient load in the neighbouring houses , instead you must check the location of the closest overhead cables capable of supplying three phase electricity. .

These prices will not include the actual work carried out by an electrician, The electrician is responsible for drawing a schematic plan of all the sockets, swithes ,wiring, fuse ratings and overall load required for the house and submitting it to the electricity board for consideration.

Renovations

If you buy an old house that needs rewiring, you must use a Greek electrician in Crete. Some people have used english electricians who then get a Greek electrician to check the work and "verify" it. Ultimately this may work out more expensive, not least if you cannot find a Greek electrician prepared to sign off somebody else's work.
